Here Are the New Traffic Laws Coming in 2017

Beginning January 1:

  • Children who are 2 years old or younger need to be secured in a rear-facing child safety seat. Previously, only children under 1 year old had to ride rear-facing. They are exempt if they weigh more than 40 pounds or are more than 40 inches tall, since not all safety seats accommodate children of that size.
  • Smartphones and other wireless devices need to be mounted within a vehicle when being used by drivers in a capacity limited to one swipe or tap of the finger. It can be mounted on a dashboard, center console or lower corner of the windshield as long as it's not hindering the driver's view.
  • The Department of Motor Vehicles needs to be notified if you're involved in a crash that causes an injury or at least $1,000 in damage. The previous law required people to notify the DMV if there was at least $750 in damage.
