Easter Baskets for Coachella Valley Foster Kids

This is a follow-up to the Coachella Valley Foster Kids fundraiser last November.

Stacy Boeskin spearheaded the drive for Easter baskets . . . and our residents responded!

This will make Easter special for many children in foster care.

Citrus RoundUp Recap

The Desert Gardeners Club hosted a Citrus RoundUp receiving excess citrus from residents of SCSH. 29 volunteers received, cleaned, sorted and bagged 330 bags of assorted citrus. These bags of fruit were donated to St. Margaret’s Neighbor4Neighbor food distribution program to families in need from the Coachella Valley. Thank you to residents and Desert Gardeners for helping us be good neighbors.

Desert Life Holiday Luncheon 2023

Celebrating the Holiday Season Desert Life style with all of our friends and neighbors! The generosity of this group is nothing less than amazing. As you watch the video you will see two groups of tables loaded with stuffed animals and toys for the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission as well as stuffed animals donated to the children of the servicemen and women stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base. Holiday entertainment was provided by our very own SCSH Community Holiday Singers. The beauty of voices, community and giving. Hope you enjoy!

The Sun City Shadow Hills Veterans Club would like to express our appreciation for the assistance of the SCSH Homeowner’s Association staff in getting the word out about this year’s Toys for Tots Campaign.

We would also like to extend a big “THANK YOU” to the residents of Sun City Shadow Hills who so generously donated toys to the campaign. Thanks to your generosity, a total of 684 toys were collected for distribution in our area.

Thank you again, and happy holidays!

CVFK Mini Golf Tournament Recap

THANK YOU, SCSH!!!
YOU OPENED YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR WALLETS

November 14 was a special day at SCSH. Together, we raised more than $13,000 to benefit Coachella Valley Foster Kids. The event, organized by Stacy Boeskin and Linda Aasen, featured a mini-golf tournament and silent auction. We hosted 144 golfers, over 75 auction items, and a slew of volunteers.

Putting, music, food, games, a silent auction and, most important, camaraderie made this a successful fundraiser as well as a sensational day for our community.

The vibe at the event was full of goodwill, cheer, and generosity. Volunteers worked side by side to pull off a spectacular day that benefited the kids and our residents. Not only did the event raise money, it increased awareness of the needs of the 1,200 to 1,500 foster kids here in the Valley – truly a win-win for the kids and the seniors!

Golden Seniors Social Club

It has been an exciting two months for our club! We held our Halloween gathering in October, with almost forty members attending, some of them in full costume, celebrating the fifties.

In November, we held our Thanksgiving Social, honoring veterans. Mia interviewed Jerry and Jan Selinfruend, who have been supporting the Non-Commissioned Officers Association (NCOA) for many years. Jan honored three veterans, (one from the Second World War and two from the Korean war) with medals.

Our December social includes plans to have a Winter Holiday Gathering, including live music, a sing-along, coffee and beverages, and homemade holiday cookies, graciously offered by our members. This will take place on December 20 in the Capistrano Room.

Our members are enjoying the gatherings and are looking forward to our future events. They are “always among friends!”

We can’t wait to share the season with all of you!

Marie DeVito Honored with Desert Life’s Star Award!

When Marie De Vito moved to SCSH from Wisconsin in 2012, she knew not a sole in the community. Her neighbor invited her to attend a meeting of the Desert Life Club! That led to Marie joining the Club who at the time was seeking a volunteer to serve as Membership Chair on the Board. Marie thought what a great opportunity it would give her to meet other newcomers and get involved in the community.

Marie has since served on the Desert Life Board nine terms in the capacity of Membership, Treasurer and, in times of vacancy, both positions.

In a recent interview, Marie explained that soon after joining Desert Life, she happened to be sitting at a table with a member whose son was stationed at the 29 Palms Marine Base. As part of the conversation, the mother explained that many of the Marines didn’t even have money to buy diapers. Marie brought this information to the Board suggesting that they do a “diaper drive”.

The result was amazing and was also the impetus to the Club expanding its charter to include philanthropic involvement with Coachella Valley’s charity organizations and the creation of the Charity/Outreach Chairperson position on the Board. Today, along with a beautiful lunch and interesting program, a local charity is chosen that provides Desert Life a “wish list” and the members fill that list. Participation in donations by members is always voluntary and our members prove to be most generous.

It is a total coincidence that in December, Marie’s last month as Treasurer of Desert Life, the Club is doing a “stuffed animal” Christmas drive for the children of the Marine Base.

Desert Life’s coveted Star Award honors members who go above and beyond serving the Club and the Community.

Marie had no idea what was happening when President, Mary Jane Stratman (AKA MJ) began to describe the contributions of the award recipient at the recent October 2023 meeting:

This wonderful woman has an incredible sense of humor, great resilience, and steps in at the drop of a hat to help when and where she can. She does so without seeking praise and has a passion in her actions to bring amusement to lighten everyone’s experience.

She counts, reports, informs, often interjecting a quick quip to lighten the delivery of otherwise very droll details. Behind the scenes she offers well thought out input to help ensure our funds are spent wisely benefiting our members as well as the charities we support.

A woman who has stepped up to serve the Desert Life Club as a Board Member for nine years. If you’ve served on this or, any other volunteer Board, you understand that many hours and a great deal of dedication goes into a job that pays only with gratitude for a job well done.

Yes Ladies, our honoree today and recipient of the Star Award is none other than our friend and neighbor Marie DeVito.

It was thrilling to watch Marie’s expression as she suddenly realized she that was the recipient!

In accepting the award Marie pointed out that not only had she served in various Board positions but had once been the Club’s “entertainment” when a guest speaker suddenly cancelled.

She urged others to volunteer as “it’s a great way to meet people and make a difference.”

Thank you, Marie, for all you’ve done to help the Desert Life Club grow into a nearly 200-member strong Club that has fun, enjoys friendship, and gives back to our community at large!

The SCSH Newcomers club is forming as a social club designed to introduce new residents to Sun City Shadow Hills, to make new friends, and to learn about our beautiful new community together!

The response to our first interest meeting was overwhelming, and our brand new club was officially approved by the board on October 30, 2023. Refreshments were served at our gathering, and a great time was had by all!

Non-Fiction Addiction Book Club

The SCSH Non-Fiction Addiction Book Club, which is part of Readers Ink, had a fun social gathering at Jhan and Connie Schmitz’s home. This was a wonderful opportunity for NFA members to meet the leadership of Readers Ink, the parent book club. About forty members and guests attended the party, and everyone enjoyed wine, soft drinks, and appetizers and desserts brought by the members. We hope you will appreciate the photos below and invite residents to join Readers Ink and NFA to read exciting and informative books and participate in lively discussions.
