We just wanted to share with everyone some information about your police department’s Nextdoor account. As an public service agency account we cannot see the individual discussions that occur within each neighborhood. We can only view messages or replies that are sent directly to the Indio Police Department and Chief Mike Washburn’s accounts.

That said we encourage everyone to contact the Indio Police Department when they see or know of any suspicious activity in their neighborhood. We are also encouraging all our neighbors to make sure their homes and vehicles are as secure as possible every night. We have started the 9PM Routine and send out occasional reminds to do the following at 9:00 pm EVERY night:

1. Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
2. Lock and secure your vehicles.
3. Lock and secure you house and garage.
4. Turn on your outside lights.
5. Report any suspicious activity!

You can be assured that your police officers are doing everything in their power to make Indio as safe as it can be! Working together we can have a significant impact on these preventable crimes of opportunity.

INDIO, CA (July 25, 2018) – In order to preserve the City of Indio’s legal appeal rights, on Tuesday July 24, 2018, the Indio City Attorney’s Office reluctantly filed a Petition for Writ of Mandate and a Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief in reference to The Lighthouse, a retail business that sells recreational marijuana located on Avenue 48 and Van Buren Street in the City of Coachella.

It is important to express that the City of Indio did not make this decision lightly as it recognizes and values the right of every city to exercise local control over land use matters within their jurisdiction. This lawsuit does not challenge the City of Coachella’s rights to allow the sale of recreational marijuana within their community. The City of Indio relayed this message to the City of Coachella on numerous occasions. Rather, the complaint challenges the discretionary actions taken by the City of Coachella to permit the temporary and permanent operations of The Lighthouse dispensary without following the statutory process for issuing those entitlements.

Such action has disadvantaged those entities that have concerns regarding the location of this particular recreational marijuana retail business. The Lighthouse is located within close proximity of Martin Van Buren Elementary School in the City of Indio, the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission as well as hundreds of rental housing units provided by the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition, including farmworker housing, and near the multi-family residential community of Desert Gardens among other sensitive uses.

On three previous occasions, the City of Indio pointed out in writing the various procedural missteps in approving the temporary operation of The Lighthouse solely to allow the business to sell recreational marijuana during the three weekends of the music festivals as well as Coachella’s subsequent approval of its permanent operation. In seeking resolution outside of litigation, the City of Indio offered to enter into a tolling agreement with the City of Coachella to freeze the statute of limitations period to make filing of a legal action unnecessary. Unfortunately, our offer received no response.

Notwithstanding, the City of Indio and the other affected parties will continue to seek resolution of this matter outside of the legal system.

As you may know, the City of Indio is currently in the process of updating its General Plan. The General Plan is a state mandated document that represents goals, policies, and programs that provide the framework for the City’s future physical development. The Indio General Plan will address land use, transportation, housing, safety, conservation, open space, noise, public health, sustainability, and economic development.

We are pleased to announce that a public draft of the Indio General Plan update is available for review. A copy of the draft General Plan can be viewed and downloaded by visiting www.indio2040.org. It is with a heavy heart we would like to share the below information regarding the sudden passing of Officer Velasquez.

Officer Velasquez was hired with the Indio Police Department on July 7, 2016. After a brief but brave battle with a rare form of lung cancer, Officer Velasquez passed away on May 31, 2018.

The entire Indio Police Department is mourning the loss of our sister in blue. We were shaken to our core to learn of her unexpected passing. Officer Velasquez was a beautiful soul with an infectious smile. Her IPD family and the community she served will miss her greatly.

Izzy, though you may have lost the battle, we carry on in your name to fight the good fight. We will remain forever W455 Strong. We have the watch from here, as you hold the line from above. Until we see you again, may your smile never fade in our heart.

Construction Work Will Enhance Safety and Access for the Community

INDIO, CA (May 14, 2018) – The Sun Gold Community Street Improvement Project in Indio begins May 14 and continues through August 7, 2018. The project will improve streets in the Sun Gold Community, which is bounded by Miles Avenue, Monroe Street, Indio Boulevard and Oasis Street. The work includes crack filling and slurry sealing existing asphalt pavement sections; and removal and reconstruction of various concrete curbs, gutters, and cross gutters. Existing utilities within the work limits will be protected in place, or adjusted, repaired, or replaced to match the newly finished grade. Roadway signing and striping will be installed after all pavement reconstruction and slurry sealing is complete. The first phase of the project starts on Miles Avenue from Monroe Street to Oasis Street. The construction work will improve safety and access to homes, Miles Avenue Park, the Coachella Valley History Museum, various businesses, and downtown Indio.

Access will be maintained to all private and public facilities within the work limits, with lane closures, traffic control, and restricted parking areas during the project. Notifications will be distributed by the contractor to affected residents and businesses. Parking along residential streets will have temporary (1-2 day) restrictions while the slurry material cures. Construction will be performed in segments to minimize traffic impacts. Please adhere to traffic signs and notices. This project will improve and prolong the life of the existing pavement. The $1.2 million project is funded primarily by the Community Development Block Grant Program and a portion of Measure X funds.

The Indio City Council has made it a priority to improve streets throughout the community as the largest and fastest growing city in eastern Riverside County. Road improvements are also occurring along Highway 111, Varner Road, and Avenue 42 to increase safety for drivers and pedestrians; improve access to local businesses and homes; prepare for future economic development projects; and accommodate future traffic with thousands of people visiting and moving to Indio every year. Last year, as part of our long standing partnership with Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG), the Jefferson Interchange and Jackson Street Traffic Signal and Intersection Improvement Project were completed. We thank CVAG for the continued support of regional infrastructure and transportation projects. In addition, we thank Valley Sanitary District (VSD) for funding and construction of the Valley Sanitary District Requa Sewer Project, also completed last year.

Construction Work Will Improve Safety & Increase Access to Businesses

INDIO, CA (April 30, 2018) – With the conclusion of the world’s most famous music festivals in Indio, all construction work on the Highway 111 Street Improvement Project in Indio resumes on Tuesday, May 1^st and will continue through Thanksgiving. The next phase of the project will be from Las Palmas Road to Rubidoux Street, which is scheduled from May 1^st to June 29^th. Then from Granada Drive to Las Palms Road from June 14^th to August 17^th, and the intersection of Madison Street from July 23^rd to September 28^th. Final paving and striping will take place from October 1^st to November 15^th throughout the entire length of the project area. 

The reconstruction of a two-mile section of Highway 111 between Rubidoux Street to west of Madison Street began in January to widen the roadway to three lanes in each direction; and to replace and upgrade pavement, traffic signals, sidewalks, driveways and access ramps. During construction, certain traffic lanes in each direction will remain open at all times to provide access to businesses. Construction is being performed in segments to minimize traffic impacts. However, there may be times driveways and side streets may be closed, or utility or traffic signal work will be performed so please adhere to traffic signs and notices.

The Highway 111 Street Improvement Project in Indio will increase safety for drivers and pedestrians, improve access to local businesses, prepare for future economic development projects, and accommodate future traffic with thousands of people visiting and moving to Indio every year as the largest and fastest growing city in eastern Riverside County.

This $10.3 million project is funded by: the City of Indio through Measure X sales tax; Coachella Valley Association of Governments through Measure A and the Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fee; Riverside County through Measure A; State of California through SB 1 (Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017) and the Transportation Development Act (Article 3 - SB 821 Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Program); and the Federal government through the Federal Surface Transportation Program.

Wreaths to be Placed at the Coachella Valley Cemetery in Preparation for Memorial Day

INDIO, CA (April 16, 2018) – Now an annual tradition, Indio Senior Center members will once again participate in the upcoming “Wreath Project” on May 23, 2018, to honor veterans at the Coachella Valley Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day.

Hundreds of wreaths are placed on veteran’s plots at the Coachella Valley Cemetery located in Coachella. Nearly 30 seniors from the Indio Senior Center participate in the annual event. Wreaths are also placed at the cemetery during Veteran’s Day and Christmas.

“Our goal is to ensure that every veteran plot has a wreath to honor and appreciate them,” said Sylvia Tenorio, President of the Board of the Friends of the Indio Senior Center. “With every wreath placed, we give thanks to our veterans for their service.”

Wreaths are purchased through donations and fundraising efforts by the Friends of the Indio Senior Center and the Freedom Flags for Families program, which supports veterans and active duty personnel in the Coachella Valley.

The public is welcome to participate in the event. Volunteers meet at the Indio Senior Center at 11:00 am on May 23, 2018, before heading over to the cemetery to place wreaths between 11:30 am and 3:00 pm The Coachella Valley Cemetery is located at 82925 Avenue 52, Coachella, CA 92236.

Assistant Chief Shaefer began his law enforcement career in 1982 as a police officer for the City of Manteca, California. In 1992 he joined the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms/Explosives Agency. In 2004 Assistant Chief Shaefer was transferred to ATF Headquarters in Washington, D.C. where he served in the Inspection Division until accepting his new position with the Indio Police Department.

Call for Entries Now Open through March 2^nd; $5,000 in Prizes to Be Awarded to Winning Artists

The City of Indio’s Public Arts and Historic Preservation Commission invites all professional artists to participate in the 10th Annual Art in the Square Chalk Festival on March 8-11, 2018, in downtown Indio.

Awards for participating professional artists will be: First Place – $2,500; Second Place –

$1,500; and Third Place – $1,000. Professional artists from all original art disciplines are encouraged to apply.

“We’re so pleased to be bringing this family-friendly festival back to Indio for its 10th year,” said William G. Maloney, Public Arts & Historic Preservation Commission Chair. “This event is a great way for professional artists to vie for cash prizes while showcasing their art for those attending this fun weekend filled with chalk art, food and live music.”

Chalk made by Eternity is provided, or professional artists can opt to bring their own chalk. Artists may request the size of their space in advance as part of their application. Chalk art space will be designated on the concrete sidewalks and asphalt surfaces of Miles Avenue between Oasis and Smurr Streets in downtown Indio.

Application forms can be downloaded at www.discoverindio.com/chalkfestival or www.indio.org, and will be accepted through March 2, 2018. There is a $25 fee to apply. Notifications will be sent immediately upon acceptance via U.S. mail, along with a professional artist packet including detailed information about the festival.

Accepted artists must be present all 4 days of the festival, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, regardless of weather. Professional artists will begin their art on Thursday morning, March 8th, and continue throughout the festival. Awards for artists will be announced Sunday afternoon, March 11th, at 1:00 pm Professional artists must be 18 years or older to participate.

The 10th Annual Art in the Square Chalk Festival is free to attend, and will include food vendors as well as entertainment.

Today the Indio Police Department swore-in three new officers. Pictured from left to right with Cheif Washburn:

• Officer Josue Hernandez joins our department as a full time police officer after serving 5 years as a volunteer with both the Cadet and Citizens Helping Indio Police (CHIP) programs.
• Assistant Chief Tully comes to our department after serving over 23 years at the San Bernardino Police Department and achieving the rank of Lieutenant. Assistant Chief Tully served in a variety of special assignments to include K-9, SWAT, and as a member of the Distressed Neighborhood Grant Team. Additionally, he was Watch Commander and oversaw many units such as Professional Standards and Investigations.
• Officer Reiley Godfrey comes to our department after serving as a park ranger for the Downey Police Department.

The City of Indio is the largest and most populated city in the Coachella Valley desert region of southern California. The city’s estimated population is about 89,000; nearly 68 percent of residents are Hispanic and approximately 33 percent of residents are 18 years of age or younger. Tree Planting to Take Place at Dr. Carreon Park

INDIO, CA (December 5, 2017) – The City of Indio will celebrate its 11th Annual Arbor Day on Thursday, December 7, 2017, from 9 am to 11 am at Dr. Carreon Park located at 82200 Dr. Carreon Blvd.

“It is an honor for me to recognize the city’s commitment to sustainability as the only Tree City USA Community in the Coachella Valley,” said incoming Mayor Michael Wilson. “Our trees not only provide shade, cut cooling/heating costs, and cleanse the air, but they also increase property values and help beautify our neighborhoods.”

Arbor Day was founded nearly 150 years ago and is now observed across the nation and the world. The Arbor Day Foundation is the largest non-profit conservation and education organization dedicated to tree planting. Its Tree City USA program was founded in 1976 and cities can only achieve such status by meeting its core standards of sound urban forestry management.

The community is invited to serve as volunteers as well as donate and plant trees during the celebration. La Hacienda Nursery, West Coast Arborists, Excel Landscaping, Indio Youth Sports Association, and the Woman’s Club of Indio have already committed to providing trees and materials, and the number of individual tree donations is growing.

The City of Indio plans to kick off the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, December 2 at 5:00 PM. The event, which is free and open to the public. The festivities include the live tree lighting, carolers from local Indio schools, community performances, and of course a visit from Santa! The public is encouraged to bring their cameras as children will have the opportunity to take a photo with Santa after the tree lighting ceremony.

Today, VA Secretary David Shulkin joined President Donald Trump in the Oval Office for the President’s signing of a proclamation establishing November as Veterans and Military Families Month.

This is the first time that America will celebrate Veterans and Military Families for the entire month and not just on Veterans Day.

“Our Veterans and Military Families are an important part of our lives throughout the year, and by focusing for the first time nationally on a whole month of activities nationwide for Veterans and Military Families Month, we can more fully celebrate and recognize their contributions to the nation,” said Secretary Shulkin.

INDIO, CA (October 23, 2017) – The city of Indio’s Public Works Department and Indio Water Authority announced the road closure of a section of Avenue 44 at Terra Lago Parkway from October 23 to December 14, 2017. Detour signage and traffic control will be placed to direct traffic around the construction area. All residents and guests of the Four Seasons at Terra Lago community must enter through the main gate on Terra Lago Parkway from Golf Center Parkway.

As part of an ongoing developer-managed street improvement by K. Hovnanian, 18-inch water mains of approximately 1,800 linear feet, reaching approximately 600 feet west of the Terra Lago Parkway intersection at Avenue 44, and approximately 1,200 feet east of the same intersection will be constructed for the Indio Water Authority by Jones Brother Construction.
