City of Indio to Sponsor Tachevah 2018

On October 19, the City of Indio held its Annual State of the City where Mayor Elaine Holmes announced the city of Indio as a sponsor of the Desert Sun's 2018 Tachevah music concert showcase series that will culminate for the finals at the Indio Block Party on May 5, 2018. City of Indio Announces Road Repavement Project

INDIO, CA (October 13, 2017) – The city of Indio’s Public Works Department will be repaving two neighborhoods from October 16 to 19, 2017. Measure X funds will be used for this project. Residents are required to move vehicles on the street and will experience road closures during street grinding and repaving operations. Any vehicles that are not moved will be towed. Work will take place from 6am to 5pm. 

Calhoun St. and Dr. Carreon Blvd.

The neighborhood generally located east of Calhoun St. and south of Dr. Carreon Blvd. will have pavement ground on Monday, October 16 and repaved on Tuesday, October 17. 

Hopi Ave.

The neighborhood on Hopi Ave. from the west end of Cahuilla Park to the west terminus of Hopi Ave. will be repaved along with the five cul-de-sacs that branch off of Hopi Ave. to the north side.  The pavement will be ground on Tuesday, October 17, and the repaving will be on Wednesday, October 18 and Thursday, October 19.

City of Indio Now Accepting Applications for Community Grant, Sponsorship Opportunities

City Council Dedicating Funds to Organizations Serving Local Businesses

INDIO, CA (August 15, 2017) – The city of Indio is inviting organizations, non-profits and government agencies to apply for funding under its annual Community Grant/Sponsorship Program. Made available by the Indio City Council, the program is for the current fiscal year, which runs through June 30, 2018. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2017. Applications can be found on the city of Indio’s home page, www.indio.org.

“We recognize the need for consistent re-investment in our local organizations in order to create new opportunities for the business community,” said Indio Mayor Elaine Holmes. “The Community Grant/Sponsorship Program contributes to that effort, as well as the overall quality of life for our residents.”

The sponsorship program requirements are as follows:

  • To be eligible for in-kind assistance, a sponsorship or fee waiver, an organization must provide evidence that the activity will benefit the city of Indio or its residents by: (i) enhancing the quality of life or the delivery of services in Indio; or (ii) strengthening the business community in Indio, supporting the city’s overall economic development program or enhancing Indio’s marketing capacity and recognition in the

DUI Saturation Patrol Nets 1 Arrest

Indio Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol on 08/13/2017, between the hours of 8:00 PM and 3:00 AM. High Visibility Enforcement efforts like this have a deterrent effect, lowering the incidents of impaired driving. The following are the results of the eight-hour operation:

  • 36 Vehicle enforcement stops
  • 1 DUI-Alcohol/Drug suspects arrested,
  • 7 Drivers evaluated for DUI
  • 0 Arrested on other Criminal Charges
  • 0 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked
  • 3 Vehicles were towed
  • 16 Citations issued

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft, or Curb.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

The DUI Saturation Patrol was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1.”

City of Indio Appoints Interim City Manager

INDIO, CA (August 4, 2017) – The Indio City Council appointed Mark Scott as Interim City Manager at its City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Mr. Scott has served in numerous management positions, including City Manager of the city of Beverly Hills for nearly fourteen years, as well as City Manager in the city of Spartanburg, South Carolina and the cities of Culver City, Fresno and Burbank.

A resident of Rancho Mirage, Mr. Scott recently announced he was stepping down as City Manager for the city of San Bernardino, a position he had assumed following the December 2015 terrorist attack, to help the city exit a long‐term bankruptcy and restore municipal service levels. After completion of the bankruptcy case in June, he announced plans to retire and spend more time in the desert with his wife Carol Scott, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert. “The timing of Mr. Scott’s decision to leave his position in San Bernardino was fortuitous for Indio,” said Mayor Elaine Holmes. “We are pleased to have this opportunity to bring a seasoned manager like Mark to the city of Indio. Having served as City Manager for the past 28 years, the city will benefit from someone with the depth and breadth of experience that Mark has, and we are fortunate to have him join our team.”

Scott’s city management career has been extensive and diverse. He worked for the city of Beverly Hills for 20 years in total, and was the longest tenured city manager in the city’s history. He then spent six years in Spartanburg, South Carolina, joining a team that was helping to restore the economy in a community that had suffered from the decline of the textile industry. Since then, Mr. Scott has made briefer stops in cities with a variety of specific management challenges. While in San Bernardino, Mr. Scott and his city team worked on a resolution of the 4‐year bankruptcy and took steps to restore staffing, local economic confidence, and service levels that had declined. They also won voter approval of a new City Charter implementing a Council‐Manager form of governance. “We are confident that Mark’s experience and reputation will help us during this transition,” commented Mayor Holmes.

“I am honored that the Mayor and City Council appointed me for this interim position. Since my wife and I moved to the desert, I have taken note of Indio’s strong local identity and huge upside potential. I am proud to take on this role and am energized about working with this City Council and Indio’s management team,” commented Mr. Scott.

Mr. Scott grew up in Fresno, California and received his undergraduate degree in Public Administration from California State University, Fresno. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. His background also includes a stint with American Airlines at their Dallas/Fort Worth headquarters where he was the first Marketing Manager for the AAdvantage program, the industry’s first frequent flyer program. He was also a co‐founder of the City‐County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA).

The existing WB I-10 onramp at Jefferson Street will be permanently closed on August 7, 2017 at 5:00 AM.

The new permanent WB onramp will open on August 14, 2017 at the new location off of the new Jefferson Street Bridge.

Indio Library to Experience Temporary Closure for Refresh Project

INDIO, CA. (July 19, 2017) — The Riverside County Library System is excited to announce that the Indio Library will be closing for a short period of time in order to make some improvements to the facility. This refresh project will bring a new vibrancy to the library with new paint, new carpet, new workspaces, selected new fixtures and of course new BOOKS! To accomplish these improvements a temporary closure of the library will be required.

The closure will be for a period of around six weeks starting July 31 and is scheduled to re-open on September 11. All Indio Library programs will be on hold during that time. Patrons may return items at the Indio Library in the book drop as well as at any of our other Riverside County Library System branches. Local branches include:

  • La Quinta Library – 78-275 Calle Tampico, La Quinta
  • Coachella Library – 1538 Seventh Ave, Coachella
  • Palm Desert Library – 73-300 Fred Waring Dr., Palm Desert
