The world renowned Indio International Tamale Festival, presented by the City of Indio and produced by Cusp Agency, celebrates its 31st year in 2023. The largest Tamale Festival in the world, has become a critical nexus point for not only the mighty masa but also the richness of Coachella Valley life, crisscrossing music, art, cuisine and celebrating transnational border culture.

Last year saw the festival grow into its new home at Miles Avenue Park and this December it will return to this bucolic and welcoming space in the heart of Indio. Previous Tamale Fest award winner, Juan Carlos Barajas of Outside The Masa, continues as Culinary Director, overseeing an even richer and diverse offering of Tamales and regional deliciousness.

Registrations received before Saturday, September 30th will receive “Early Bird” pricing on available spaces. Whether you are retailing Tamales, other Food & Beverage options, hand-crafted goods or wishing to promote a local business, all are welcome to take advantage of this offer.

The festival continues its curated Tamale Plaza presented by Vallarta Supermarkets. The Chavela Throwdown returns with over 20 featured luchadors performing throughout the weekend. Returning attractions include Ballet Folklorico, a classic car show, mariachis, carnival rides, and a mercado retailing hand crafted goods, produce, records and plants.

Admission is free for all ages, with VIP Passes on sale in October at VIP passes include admission to an exclusive VIP area, featuring: premium viewing of Fantasy Springs Main Stage; (3) Tamales redeemable in VIP area; non-alcoholic beverages; elevated restrooms; seating & shade. Reserved Parking is available for purchase to VIP Pass holders.

Since the Tamale Festival’s first iteration in 1992, families and fans have lined up yearly for the widest variety of handmade tamales to be found anywhere in the world. In December of 2000, the festival made the Guinness Book of World Records for its record attendance and has been voted as one of Food Network’s Top 10 All-American Food Festivals.


The City of Indio is the largest and fastest growing city in the Coachella Valley with more than 90,000 residents. Nearly 1.4 million people visit Indio every year to attend its world famous arts, food, and music festivals, and the city is ranked as one of the top emerging travel destinations in the country. With nationally recognized public safety services, exceptional schools, great parks and senior and teen centers, no wonder more than 2,700 new housing units are in construction or being planned throughout the City, in addition to new hotels, restaurants and retailers. Indio was the first city incorporated in the Coachella Valley on May 16, 1930, and is the traditional gathering place of the desert, bearing the fruit of cultural exchange and youthful energy.
