Classic Movie Club: Groundhog Day (1993)

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Free bi-monthly screenings of critically-acclaimed and award-winning films shown on a giant screen in high definition using only restored and remastered Blu-ray discs.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“GROUNDHOG DAY” – the 1993 comedy-fantasy film directed by Harold Ramis from a screenplay by him and Danny Rubin. Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott. The film was a huge box-office success on its release, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the 1990s. It received multiple award nominations, including one for its original screenplay. Groundhog Day is considered one of the most beloved comedy films ever made, an all-time classic, and a pop culture touchstone. In 2006, the film was selected by the United States Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Classic Movie Club: The Maltese Falcon (1941)

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Free bi-monthly screenings of Oscar-winning and/or Oscar-nominated films on Blu-ray that are shown on a giant screen using a newly installed high definition 4K video projector.

On Friday May 3, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will screen:

“THE MALTESE FALCON” – the 1941 “film noir” written and directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet. The film was a huge success with the public and critics, and it received three Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Sydney Greenstreet for Best Supporting Actor, and John Huston for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Maltese Falcon eventually became one of the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress to be included in the National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Classic Movie Club: The Odd Couple (1968)

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Free bi-monthly screenings of Oscar-winning and/or Oscar-nominated films on Blu-ray that are shown on a giant screen using a newly installed high definition 4K video projector.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, at 4:00 pm the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will celebrate National Humor Month with a screening of one of the most beloved comedies of all time:

“THE ODD COUPLE” – the original 1968 film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Directed by Gene Saks, produced by Howard W. Koch, and written by Neil Simon, based on his hit 1965 play. The film was hugely successful with moviegoers and critics, and one of the highest grossing films of the 1960s. The success of the film was the basis for ABC-TV to produce a popular sitcom series based on it, starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. The film received two Oscar nominations – for Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

Classic Movie Club: Fargo (1996)

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Free bi-monthly screenings of Oscar-winning and/or Oscar-nominated films that are shown on a giant screen using a newly installed high definition 4K video projector, and using only the latest restored/remastered Blu-rays.

On Friday, April 5, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“FARGO” – the 1996 film written by Joel and Ethan Coen, and directed by Joel Coen. Starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi. The film was a huge critical and commercial success, receiving seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Macy. It won two Oscars: Best Actress for McDormand and Best Original Screenplay for the Coens. In 2006, Fargo was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

On Friday, March 8, 2024 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“MY COUSIN VINNY” – the 1992 comedy directed by Jonathan Lynn from a screenplay by Dale Launer. Starring Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio, Marisa Tomei, and Fred Gwynne. My Cousin Vinny was one of the biggest critical and financial successes of the 1990s and has since become a cult film. Tomei won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attorneys have praised the film for its accurate depiction of criminal procedure and trial strategy.

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Free bi-monthly screenings of Academy Award winning or nominated films shown on a giant screen using a newly installed high definition 4K video projector. We screen only restored or remastered Blu-ray discs.

On Friday, March 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will celebrate its Second Anniversary with a Special Tribute to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s musical star, Kathryn Grayson, screening her Oscar-nominated 1953 musical, Kiss Me Kate. Kathryn’s step-daughter, SCSH’s own Julie Johnston, will accompany club co-leader Josh Kanin in remembering Kathryn and her work.

With songs by Cole Porter, and starring Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, and Ann Miller. Dorothy Kingsley's screenplay of the film version of Kiss Me Kate was adapted from the 1948 Broadway musical's book that was written by Bella and Samuel Spewack. Critics and public raved about this movie, and along with such treasures as “Singing in The Rain,” “An American in Paris,” and “The Bandwagon,” Kiss Me Kate is remembered as one of MGM’s crowning achievements in musical comedy.

On Friday, February 9, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM – the 1987 comedy written by Mitch Markowitz, directed by Barry Levinson, and starring Robin Williams and Forest Whitaker.  The story is loosely based on the experiences of AFRS radio DJ Adrian Cronauer during the Vietnam War. Most of Williams' performances that portrayed Cronauer's radio broadcasts were improvisations. The film was released to enormous critical and commercial success. For his work in the film, Williams won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Classic Movie Club: Chinatown (1974)

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Bi-monthly screenings on Friday afternoons of Oscar-winning and nominated films shown on a giant screen in high definition using only restored and remastered Blu-ray discs.

On Friday, October 6 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“CHINATOWN” – the 1974 neo-noir film directed by Roman Polanski and produced by Robert Evans, from a screenplay by Robert Towne. Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston. At the 47th Academy Awards, “Chinatown” was nominated for 11 Oscars, with Towne winning Best Original Screenplay. The Golden Globe Awards honored it for Best Drama, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. The American Film Institute placed it second among its top ten mystery films. Furthermore, critics and film historians have considered “Chinatown” as one of the greatest films of all time.

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

On Friday, January 26, 2024 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“UP IN THE AIR” – the 2009 comedy-drama directed by Jason Reitman, with a screenplay by Reitman and Sheldon Turner. Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, and Jason Bateman. The film received Golden Globe Awards and six Oscar nominations. A number of critics and publications included Up in the Air on their lists of the best films of the 2000-2010 decade. George Clooney considered his role in the film as his personal favorite.

Free bi-monthly screenings on Friday afternoons of critically-acclaimed and award-winning films shown on a giant screen in high definition using only restored and remastered Blu-ray discs.

On Friday, January 12, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“TOMBSTONE” – the 1993 Western directed by George Cosmatos, written by Kevin Jarre, and starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, and Dana Delany, with narration spoken by Robert Mitchum. The film is based on real events that took place in the 1880s in Southeast Arizona, including the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It depicts several Western outlaws and lawmen, including Wyatt Earp, Johnny Ringo, and Doc Holliday. Director Cosmatos was highly focused on accurate historical detail, including the costumes, props, customs, and scenery, to give them authenticity. Tombstone was one of the most critically-acclaimed and highest-grossing Westerns of all time, and has become a cult classic since its release.

On Friday, December 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

BEING THERE – the 1979 satirical comedy-drama directed by Hal Ashby, based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Jerzy Kosiński. It was adapted for the screen by Kosiński and the uncredited Robert C. Jones. The film stars Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, and Melvyn Douglas, and it features in supporting roles Jack Warden, Richard Dysart, and Richard Basehart. Melvyn Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Peter Sellers was nominated for Best Actor. It was his last and his personal favorite performance. The screenplay won the British Academy Film Award for Best Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Adapted from Another Medium. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay. In 2015, the Library of Congress selected Being There for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

On Friday, December 15, 2023, at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

AIRPLANE! – the 1980 smash hit comedy written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty, and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Airplane! is a satire of the disaster film genre, and it parodies many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the 1970s Airport series. This film was a huge critical and commercial success, grossing $271 million worldwide against a budget of $3.5 million. Its creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Comedy. In 2010, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Critics and film historians have regarded Airplane! as the funniest comedy of all time!

The CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB presents:

Bi-monthly screenings on Friday afternoons of Oscar winning or nominated films shown on a giant screen in high definition using only restored and remastered Blu-ray discs.

On Friday, December 1, 2023 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“WOMAN OF THE YEAR” – the 1942 romantic comedy directed by George Stevens, produced by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. This was Tracy’s and Hepburn’s first film. They became romantically involved during its production, and went on to make eight more films together.

Woman of the Year was written by Michael Kanin and Ring Lardner Jr. At the 15th Academy Awards, they both won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Katharine Hepburn was nominated for Best Actress.

After the screening, Josh Kanin (son of co-screenwriter Michael Kanin) will talk about his father’s work on the film. He will also bring the Oscar statuette that his father received.

Thanks to the impeccable chemistry between stars Steve Martin and John Candy, as well as a deft mix of humor and heart, Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a hilarious, heartfelt Thanksgiving holiday classic.

Corral. Directed by George Cosmatos, Tombstone is considered one of the 5 greatest Westerns ever made according to the National Society of Film Critics. It was also one of the highest grossing films of the 1990s, thrilling audiences with its explosive action and gripping performances.

On Friday, October 20, 2023 at 4:00 pm in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse’s Monterey Room, the club will present:

“THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR – a 1999 sophisticated romantic heist film set in the world of fine art - directed by John McTiernan, and starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. A more modern and stylish remake of the 1968 film of the same name. Some of the famous French Impressionist paintings on display in the film’s art gallery scenes are: “San Giorgio Maggiore at Twilight” by Claude Monet; “Noon: Rest From Work” by Vincent van Gogh; “The Artist’s Garden at Eragny” by Camille Pissarro; “The Son of Man” by René Magritte; and “Banks of the Seine at Argenteuil” by Édouard Manet, among many others. The Thomas Crown Affair was a huge commercial and critical success - one of the most highly acclaimed and biggest moneymakers of the ‘90s.
