Uber has recently launched two innovative features – Senior Accounts and Simple Mode – to make ride-hailing more accessible and stress-free for older adults. These updates are designed with usability in mind, helping seniors maintain independence while also allowing family members and caregivers to offer support when needed.
Senior Accounts: Family-Supported Rides
The Senior Account feature enables a family member or caregiver to create and manage an Uber account for a senior. This is done by adding the senior to a “Family Profile” within the Uber app. Once added, the caregiver can book rides on the senior’s behalf, track the trip in real-time, and pay using a saved payment method.
Here’s how it works:
- Open the Uber app and tap on the menu.
- Go to “Settings” and select “Family.”
- Tap “Add Family Member” and enter the senior’s phone number.
- The senior receives an invite to join the Family Profile.
- Once accepted, rides can be scheduled for them, and trip details will be shared with both parties.

Seniors can also pay using a personal card, the caregiver’s card, or, for medical rides, a Medicare Flex card if eligible. This setup gives peace of mind to families who want to ensure their loved ones have reliable transportation to appointments, errands, or social outings.
Simple Mode: A User-Friendly Interface
For seniors who prefer to request their own rides, Simple Mode transforms the Uber app into a more accessible version. This mode features:
- Larger text for better readability
- Fewer buttons and simplified options
- The ability to save favorite locations, such as home, doctor’s office, or grocery store
To activate Simple Mode:
- Open the Uber app and go to “Settings.”
- Tap on “Accessibility.”
- Select “Simple Mode” to turn it on.
Once enabled, the app presents only the essential features needed to book a ride, reducing confusion and making it easier for seniors to navigate independently. Whether scheduling a regular ride or setting up favorites for faster booking, Simple Mode helps remove common technological barriers.
With these features, Uber is responding to the mobility needs of an aging population – offering both independence and caregiver support in a familiar, easy-to-use platform.
