Community Action Partnership of Riverside County is coordinating Cool Centers to provide drop-in sites for vulnerable individuals, seniors, the disabled, and others in need of temporary relief from the heat. Cool Centers will open to the public, in affected areas, when a "Heat Warning" is issued. Watch or listen for the "Heat Warning" on your television, radio, and local newspaper.

Veterans University Saturday and Sunday, 6.25&26

Veterans University is Saturday & Sunday, June 25 & 26 at Cal State San Bernardino, Palm Desert Campus.

Veterans University is open to any veterans, service men and women, their families and veteran stakeholders interested in learning more about how to improve the lives of veterans in a welcoming classroom environment.

Veterans University will span two days and cover a myriad of topics including: mental health, transportation services, general healthcare benefits, disability benefits, and employment resources for veterans. The speakers will consist of representatives from Veteran Service Organizations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Labor. Each topic will be explored broadly. Presenters will provide a broad overview of each topic, followed by practical and detailed information on how to access the benefits described. Participants will also receive contact information they can utilize, should they have difficulty accessing benefits on their own.

Please come and learn how to work in a Red Cross Managed Shelter setting:

Morning session: 9 AM – 12 PM: Shelter Fundamentals is a basic level course that introduces the guidelines and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. Referencing shelter checklists, participants will work on a case study that takes them through four of the six phases of the Sheltering Cycle: Opening, Organizing, Operating and Closing.

Afternoon session: 1 PM – 4 PM: The Shelter Fundamentals Exercise focuses on the various shelter operation tasks required to maintain a functioning shelter. Three overarching goals have been outlined for the exercise in order to provide the participants with a successful and productive learning experience: 1. Promote teamwork through interactive group activities that correspond to opening, organizing, operating and closing a shelter. 2. Reinforce the key activities and tasks that are involved in opening, organizing, operating and closing a shelter as presented in the Shelter Fundamentals course. 3. Provide participants with an opportunity to set up operate and close a shelter by practicing in the following four skills stations: Registration, Dormitory, Feeding, and Information.

  1. Take the temporary WB I-10 off-ramp at Jefferson St.
  2. Left on Varner Rd.
